WET FEET FAITH

«It was the harvest season, and the Jordan was overflowing its banks. But as soon as the feet of the priests who were carrying the Ark touched the water at the river’s edge, the water above that point began backing up a great distance away» (Joshua 3:15, 16, NLT).

There are two kinds of faith: the kind with dry feet and the kind with wet feet. Sometimes God leads us to the Red Sea, with an enemy army on our heels. Then, to our amazement, He opens the sea and we cross on dry land. This is dry feet faith: God miraculously opens the way before we get wet. Other times, however, God expects a wet feet faith from us. When we have already been walking with Him for some time, God can lead us to the Jordan River. He clearly tells us to go across, but the river is flooded! In times like these, the river does not part until our feet touch the water: that is wet feet faith.

If we refuse to believe or move forward until all uncertainty disappears, we will never experience this kind of faith. Wet feet faith requires emotional surrender and courage. In What Happens When Women Walking Faith, author Lysa Terkeurst wonders, «Am I the kind of leader who needs to see dry land first or am I willing to get a little wet and dirty, to proceed toward the unknown trusting in Him?» And you, what kind of faith would you like to have?

I am convinced that God grants us opportunities to grow in faith. We usually read the story of Peter, who steps out of the boat and walks toward Jesus on the water, as a failure (see Matthew 14:22, 33). It is true that Peter doubted and began to sink, but it is also true that he took a risk and got more than his feet wet. In the process, he learned a valuable lesson: that Jesus does not abandon us when our faith falters. I do not know what your boat or your river bank is today, but I invite you to believe and proceed. Wet feet faith is not presumption, it is trust. It is believing that when God calls you, He will also open up unexpected paths; in the desert and even on the sea.

Lord, today I want to step out of the boat of certainty and what I know. By faith, I want to make my way to unexplored territory and conquer it for Your kingdom.
Give me wet feet faith and holy courage. Amen.
