WE ALL PARTAKE OF THE «SPOILS»

“The share of the man who stayed with the supplies is to be the same

as that of him who went down to the battle”

(1 Samuel 30:24, MIV]

TRY TO IMAGINE THE SCENE. David and his soldiers return to Ziklag, the city which Achish, the Philistine King of Gath, had assigned to them as temporary refuge from Saul’s fierce persecution. What do they find upon their arrival? They find the Amalekites had burned down their city and taken their wives and children captive (see l Samuel 27:1—7).

After weeping “until they had not more power to weep,” David’s soldiers tried to find someone to blame. And that person was none other than… David himself, whom they decided to stone. However, while his men were talking of stoning him, David took courage and inquired of the Lord (1 Samuel 30:6), “ ‘Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?’ And He answered him, ‘Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all’ ” (v. 8).

The Scriptures say that David went with his six hundred men, to pursue the Amalekites, but when they came to the Brook Besor, ‘ two hundred stayed behind, who were so weary that they could not cross the Brook” (vv. 9, 10). With the four hundred men who still had strength, David defeated the Amalekites, freed the captives, recovered everything that had been stolen and also took an abundant spoil.

Then a very interesting incident took place, “Then all the wicked and worthless men of those who went with David answered and said, ‘Because they did not go with us, we will not give them any of the spoil that we have recovered, except for every man’s wife and children, that they may lead them away and depart’ ” (v. 22).

Notice David’s reply, “My brethren, you shall not do so with what the Lord has given us […}. But as his part is who goes down to the battle, so shall his part be who stays by the supplies; they shall share alike” (vv. 23, 24).

“The Lord has given it to us,” said David. So we should all partake of the “spoils” alike! Now you tell me: Doesn’t that sound like the pure gospel? Whether we preach the Word from the pulpit; or take part in a prayer group behind the scenes; or, like the poor window, give only two cents as an offering, we all partake of the joy of salvation “alike.” Because the Lord is the One who gives us victory!

If David’s words teach us anything, it is that we are all an important part of God’s people: pastors, treasurers, secretaries, administrators, evangelists, teachers, nurses, doctors, homemakers. . . And if those words remind us of anything, it is that all of us alike will receive an immortal crown.

Thank You, Lord. because you have give  me work to do in  Your vineyard.

No matter how big or small it may be, I want to do it faithfully.

for the glory of Your name.
