«That they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me» (John 17:21).
Every comic book superhero has a different power. Spider-Man, for example, has great agility and gripping ability. Flash is very fast, and Superman possesses extraordinary strength. If I could choose a superpower, I would ask to be able to speak all the languages of the world (those of the past, present, and future). Every language I can’t speak is a barrier that limits my ability to understand and connect me with others. Imagine how beautiful it would be to understand all languages, or better yet, speak a common language. What if I told you this isn’t a dream or a movie fantasy?
In the book of Zephaniah there is a prophecy that is, in some way, the reverse of the experience of the tower of Babel. Zephaniah described the moment when all the redeemed will worship with one voice in the new Jerusalem. «For then I will restore to the peoples a pure language, that they all may call on the name of the Lord, To serve Him with one accord (Zephaniah 3:9). It is possible that it has to do with a common language shared by all redeemed people or the ability to understand all languages. On the «Enduring Word» website, biblical commentator David Guzik wrote, «In this final restoration, God will give the world a common language again (purity of lips), and everyone will worship the Lord, not just Israel.» One day, all the economic, cultural, and social differences that separate us will disappear forever. How beautiful!
However, not only do we have to wait for that day; we must begin to bridge distances here and now. «Those who are united to Christ by the truth of heavenly origin should have strong friendship for one another,» wrote Ellen G. white in Pastoral Ministry. «In Christ Jesus there is love, and those who are united to Christ will not have merely a tame, common regard as acquaintances, but true, sincere love for one another.»—ch. 48, p. 269.
Jesus said that the world will believe that we are His followers if we are united. He calls us to put our differences behind us and start singing together here and now.
Dear Lord, I want to learn to worship along with all the women in the world. Help me see that it is more what unites us than what separates us. Free me from social, economic, and cultural prejudices! Fill my heart with Your compassion and Your love.
