«After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias» (John 21 : 1).
THE WORDS OF THE APOSTLE JOHN in our text today speak of «the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead» (John 21:14). The first had taken place in the upper room on the day of the resurrection, and the second, in the same room, one week later. Now He was meeting with some of them in a place saturated with memories: by the Sea of Galilee.
It was on the shores of the Sea of Galilee that the Lord had called Simon and his brother Andrew; as well as James and John, the sons of Zebedee. And it was also there that, obeying His command, they had cast the net after a whole night of fruitless work. The result was that they «caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking» (Luke 5:6).
At the time of this third appearance, the disciples did not know that the Lord was watching them. Thus, Peter suggested going fishing, and the others decided to go with him, but «that night they caught nothing» (John 21:3). Then a Stranger greeted them in a very familiar way.
«Boys, don’t you have anything to eat?» He asked them. «No,» they replied (v. 5).
What a curious way to greet them, because the disciples were anything but «boys. » The Greek term may mean «little children»; or you could also understand it colloquially as «my boys. »
So there are «His boys,» tired and hungry, after working all night without being able to catch a single fish. » ‘Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.’ So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish» (v. 6).
When the disciples got ashore, «they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread» (v. 9). «Jesus said to them, ‘Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.’. . . ‘Come and eat breakfast’ » (vv. 10, 12).
Do we realize what happened that morning? The Lord of Glory, victor of the tomb, to whom every power in heaven and on earth had been given, prepared breakfast for «His boys.» What a wonderful thing! This was His way of saying to them, «Though they were to be deprived of His personal companionship, and of the means of support by their former employment, the risen Saviour would still have a care for them. While they were doing His work, He would provide for their needs.»—The Desire of Ages, ch. 85, p. 810.
Wonderful Savior, these are the things that make me fall to my knees before You and say.
«Worthy are You, Jesus Christ, to receive honor and glory, now and for all eternity!»
