As WOMEN TODAY, we live rushed, harried, and tiresome lives. From dawn to well into the night, we feel pressured by endless things to do, some important ones and others not so much, but they end up being urgent because of our false understanding of the «sense of usefulness.» It’s that simple: some women feel useless if they are not performing some tasks. Of course, I don’t intend to persuade you today to be lazy; I only want you to put a stop to your eternal «running about» to look around you and notice all the things you are not enjoying.
Today, while I was rushing to do a task, I arrived at the shopping center at sunset. I glanced at my watch and, slamming my car door, hurriedly left to do my errand. Then I heard a choir of grateful voices praising the Creator before going to sleep. I looked up and saw more than a hundred mockingbirds (cenzontles, which in the nåhuatl dialect mean «the bird of four hundred voices») flocking about a great tree that was their bedroom. What a sight! How much wisdom! Designed by God, they only follow what their instinct tells without question or delay. My heart was filled with gratefulness for having been taught and having learned a great lesson.
If we rush, we cannot duly consider the beauty around us. Burdened and exhausted by daily chores, we lose our happiness and optimism. We don’t have time to see divine things happening around us: a bud opening up in the morning sun, bird songs, a butterfly’s fragile flight, a cricket singing even if its home is in a cold, dark hole, a baby’s laughter, a puppy’s happiness when it sees us, the taste of ice cream, the soft feel of water running through our fingers, sunset colors, the size of the moon and the twinkling stars… Everything is worthy of being seen, but we miss it because we are running after fleeting things of little value.
To avoid missing out so many blessings within your reach, how about if instead of rushing out this morning, you stop? Look and look! And thank God for so many beautiful things still on Earth, which are a foretaste of the wonders we will enjoy and see in our heavenly home.
