WHAT WAS INSIDE THE ARK OF THE COVENANT?

Underline the correct answer

a. The altar of incense

b. The Ten Commandments

c. The lamp stand

Do you remember where the ark of the covenant that God commanded the Israelites to build was placed?

The ark of the covenant was inside the Most Holy Place of the sanctuary.

Do you know what that ark symbolized? It symbolized the covenant, or pact, that God had made with Israel. The Lord had made a deal, or covenant, with Israel. He had promised them that He would always be with them and the people of Israel would always trust Him and obey His law, meaning the Ten Commandments. That is why, within the ark of the covenant, were the Ten Commandments sculpted on two stone tablets.

The ark of the covenant was made of wood of acacia trees, which were abundant in the Sinai desert. It was covered with gold, both inside and out. On top of the ark of the covenant were two angels made of molten gold, facing each other, extending their wings above and covering it. It was forty inches long by twenty-eight inches wide and tall, and had some rods on the sides to help transport it.

The ark of the covenant was the most important piece of the tabernacle, because it symbolized the presence of God. Only once a year, the High Priest could enter the Most Holy Place, where the ark of the covenant was. That day was the Day of Atonement, or forgiveness.

The ark of the covenant was very important to the Israelites, because it reminded them of their covenant with God and their respect for His law, the

Ten Commandments, which show the character of God. As Jesus said, they help us to love God above all things and our neighbor as we love ourselves.

Why don’t you make a covenant with God to always obey His law?

Read the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20 and make your covenant with Jesus.

Write it in your Prayer Journal.
