Do you like writing or do you prefer reading?
In ancient times, there were people who worked writing letters and documents professionally, and they charged for doing that for other people.
In some Oriental countries, that profession still exists today.
Do you know who the first scribe mentioned in the Bible was?
His name was Ezra and he not only wrote for King Artaxerxes of persia, but he also copied the scrolls with law of God, the Torah, and taught it to the people. So a scribe wasn’t only a person who knew how to write well, but also a teacher who read and taught God’s law.
In Jesus’s days, being a scribe was a very important profession.
Many times, they weren’t called scribes but rather «teachers of the law, “because they knew the law well and taught it to others.
The teacher of the law were Pharisees who many times disagreed among themselves, and each one interpreted God’s law their own way and confused people.
That’s why Jesus scolded them, because they imposed their own rules on others and didn’t show God’s love.
But there were also many scribes who copied books inspired by God. Today we have the Bible thanks to them. The whole set of books you can now read in only one book was copied by scribes who knew and appreciated the Scriptures. The most ancient books that exist now from the Old Testament Are the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Aker having copied them on scrolls made of animal hides (skins), they were put into clay pots, and they were preserved there for about two thousand years.
In 1947, some children found them in caves called Qumran, near the Dead Sea in Israel’s West Bank.
