Relationships
«Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand» (Matthew 12:25).
Stone dragging is a rural sport that has been played in Spain, France, and Basque Country since ancient times. It is also common in Cantabria, Navarre, and Castile and Leon communities. Even if the dragging can be done by oxen, mules, horses or even humans, the most well-known form is done by a pair of yoked oxen guided by herders. The sport consists in seeing which pair can go the longest distance while dragging a huge rock in thirty minutes. The average weight is 2,000 kg per pair. When the oxen are split and made to drag the rock individually, each bovine has a limit of 500 or 600 kg. How is it possible for two oxen to drag so much more weight that one ox can on its own? Neither physics nor physiology or psychology can fully explain the phenomenon. The truth is that, when both animals pull together, they have much more strength than the sum of their individual potency.
The principle can also be applied to the human domain: athletes, factory workers, craftsmen, masons, inventors, among others, multiply their strength when they work in a team. This does not only apply to physical force, but also to mental tasks. Additionally, it is also true for relationships. When a couple, family or a work team share the same goals in which they all believe, they achieve these goals more easily and efficiently. The proverb says, «As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friends» (Prov. 27:17). Tie proverb does not place one friend in a dominant position over the other. In a friendship, everyone should be equal; no one is better than the other. Both friends «lose iron particles» as they sharpen each other.
Today’s text contains the words Jesus said before the Pharisees because they accused Him of casting out demons with Satan’s help. Jesus told them that if Satan were His partner, His house would be divided and He would not have positive results. Jesus was in harmony with God and this was the source of His strength.
It is clear to us that when we help or are in harmony with others, we easily achieve our goals. It is a true and helpful principle. But even more powerful is our partnership with Jesus. With His guidance and help, both individuals and groups will achieve noble goals and accomplish great endeavors. Team up with Jesus today and invite Him into your every thought or activity.
