THE WISE ACCEPT REBUKE

WISDOM

«Rebuke is more effective for a wise man than a hundred blows on a fool» (Proverbs 17:10)

About forty years ago, American society began to be taught that raising their children in a permissive way was best; supposedly, that way children would learn to follow their own way. That’s how children and young people took on important authority in the home. However, today we’ve got a generation that’s unable to find its place in the world and is affected by the «emperor syndrome.» Enrique Rojas, the renowned Spanish psychiatrist, describes it as follows—No te rindas [Don’t give up], Madrid: Planeta, 2011, p. 60:

  1. Adolescents have a limited ability to tolerate frustration and are led by their impulses.
  2. They develop the ability to manipulate those around them so their wishes will be obeyed. In general, they get away with doing things their way.
  3. When one of their whims is not satisfied, they react violently—physically or ver. bally—toward their parents or even themselves.
  4. Their behavior is regularly aggressive toward their parents, teachers or classmates.
  5. They don’t easily admit their mistakes because they’re not aware of the consequences of their actions.
  6. They find it hard to build a circle of friends, instead they have allies they use to further their own interests.

The biggest problem with young people affected by the «emperor syndrome» is that, in a society governed by hedonism, consumerism, permissiveness, relativism and materialism, their future is extremely discouraging because they’ll suffer from chronic dissatisfaction and will be trapped in unhappiness. What will become of them! They only know how to demand obedience and make others submit to their will. Of course, they don’t tolerate a rebuke, criticism or correction.

One of the main roles of parents is to teach their children to fend for themselves and face hard times, and not allow them to behave like dictators toward those around them.

How do you react when you receive criticism, a scolding or an unfavorable comment? That reveals what you have inside. Don’t forget that smart people learn a lot when they’re reprimanded. And if you have noticed you have some symptoms of the «emperor syndrome,» ask the Lord to teach you to overcome those attitudes

Tell the Lord today that you want to deal with your frustrating moments and learn from them.
