STRANGERS NO MORE

Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you» (Matthew 28:19, 20).  All too soon my year in Japan ended. I had to get back to my job at the radio station at Southern Missionary College and continue my studies in communications in preparation for a life of service to the God I loved.

We had a going-away party at the Osaka Center, and many of our students showed up to say goodbye. Singing favorite songs, we retold all the embarrassing stories we could remember about each other. There was a lot of hugging and laughing and even some tears. The next day I boarded the airplane that would carry me away from the land to which I’d dedicated 12 months of my life.

Jesus said that we should «go and make disciples of all nations.» Well, we’d done that. All of us student missionaries had traveled far to fulfill God’s command. We’d lived in strange houses and eaten new foods. Each day we’d seen unusual sights and listened to the sweet banter of a different language. But you know what? When we got back to America, everything seemed so strange. Japan had become our home, and we hadn’t even realized it.

God needs student missionaries to accept the responsibility of introducing people to Jesus. I can tell you from experience that He takes the «strangeness» away and replaces it with a warm, never-fading feeling of home. Why not include «student missionary» in your future plans?
