«His flesh shall be young like a child’s, he shall return to the days of his youth» (Job 33:25).
PEOPLE HAVE WANTED to live a long time since antiquity. From there comes the concept of the fountain of eternal youth. The first written reference made to this well-known myth is in the book The Histories by Herodotus (fourth century BC). In the Middle Ages, this concept was also maintained, and in the time of the conquests, the Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon heard talk about the fountain of youth from the natives of Puerto Rico; he believed he had found it in Florida in the United States, where there is to this day a museum with a fountain that bears the name «The Fountain of Youth,» found in the city of St. Augustine.
Today, looking young exerts great social influence, especially among women. «Youth» and «beauty» are synonymous. Conditioned by the culture that surrounds us, we can also fall into the temptation of panicking when the first wrinkles appear. And men are not immune to that obsession with youth; they also feel the pressure.
It seems unbelievable that it must be said, but in this life, eternal youth is not possible, so why do we get frustrated about something we cannot achieve? The focus should be on seeking the way to grow old gracefully, with a sense of purpose, with passion for life, with a mission, with the desire to help younger people in their difficulties, about which those of us who are older know a little.
In the new earth, this will not be a concern—yet another detail our heavenly Father has also taken care of. There, age will not be a factor; wrinkles will not be a worry; death will never be felt near to us; we will not have an expiration date. We have a wonderful promise in the Bible that says, «I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts» (Revelation 21:6). «That is the true fountain of eternal youth, and we do not have to go find it; God will put it before us. What we must do is live this life in such a way that we are assured of a place in the other.
