Adults often ask kids, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Most kids don’t know all the endless career choices available today, but they often respond with things like firefighter, a doctor, a teacher, or a police officer. When I was in third and fourth grade, my standard reply was that I wanted to be astronaut. The final NASA trip to the moon had occurred a few years earlier, and there was still a lot of excitement about the idea of traveling to the moon. Soon after, NASA started its space shuttle missions.
In 2010 I found myself on Florida with my family for a few days. I found out that on the second day we were there, one of the space shuttles was scheduled to launch. I had always wanted to see a shuttle launch, so we made plants to drive to Cape Canaveral to see it. Just as we were about to head out, we heard the news that the launch had been “scrubbed”, or postponed. I was sad first but hen hopeful, because it had been rescheduled for the next day. The day came, and again we made our plants to go see the launch, but once again that launch was postponed. We only had one more day left in Florida, and the news finally reported that they would try again that evening!
A few hours before that launch we checked again; the countdown was still on. We drove out to Titusville and found the spot where all the people positioned themselves to view. Would the launch take place, or would they postpone again? The minutes counted down to zero, and it launched! We stared in amazement as it blasted its way toward the heavens.
No one knows when Jesus will return. There’s no point trying to count down because the Bible says not even the angels know when that day is. Our job is to simply be ready every day and live every day for Jesus.
