THE HOME’S NOBLE PURPOSE

“But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord»

(Joshua 24: 15).

THE HOME, a sacred institution created by God with high ideals, exerts an irreplaceable influence in the education of humans, especially in the case of children and young people. It’s an institution that should guarantee physical, mental and spiritual health to its dwellers. “Chrisi has made every provision that every parent who will be controlled by the Holy Spirit will be given strength and grace to be a teacher in the home. This education and discipline in the home will have a molding and fashioning influence” (The Adventist Home, ch. 33, p. 206).

Churches and schools, as educational institutions, only contribute to the task of home education. The time children spend at home, interacting with their family, is much more important for their development and has greater impact on them than the time they spend at school or church; therefore, we can’t expect the latter to do what falls to us by flight and duty.

Authority exercised with love, kindness and respect is the ingredient that can’t be missing in children’s education at home. It’s the right way to teach values; develop habits and foster positive attitudes toward authority, including God’s supreme authority. Our daily disposition through words and actions is the mirror in which children become aware of who they are. Harsh, rude words, comparisons, nicknames and put-downs make children dislike themselves, acquire the wrong notion of God’s love, and become rebellious and emotionally distant from their relatives.

Positive emotions become positive feelings; in turn, they give way to positive concepts; then a peaceful, proactive, forgiving, balanced and even emotional state comes about, which guarantees the child a harmonious life in the world. All these things are achieved through a home environment where the Spirit of Christ is present.

God at the center of a home guarantees family stability, even in the midst of the worst tempests. “We need to trust in Jesus daily, hourly. He has promised that as our day is, our strength shall be. By His grace we may bear all the burdens of the present and perform its duties» (Testimony Treasuresvol. 2, p. 59).
