«As in water face reflects face, so a man’s heart reveals the man» (Proverbs 27:19).
FRIENDSHIP
There were once two sick men in the same hospital room. Every afternoon, to help drain liquid from his lungs, one of them was allowed to sit up in his bed, which was next to a window. However, the other man had to lie down the whole time. As the days went by, both men became great friends. Every time the man sat in bed, he described everything he could see to his partner. Listening to so many details gave the man that was lying down, unable to get up, great pleasure, and he used to close his eyes to enjoy his neighbor’s wonderful description: the park where couples in love strolled, the ducks in the pond, children playing with their kites, leafy trees decorating the scenery. … That became the best time of the day. So, every day, the man lying in bed eagerly awaited his neighbor’s daily description.
One day, a nurse entered the room and discovered that the narrator had died peacefully in his sleep. A peaceful smile could still be seen on his face. Then, his roommate asked the nurse to change him to the bed next to the window. The nurse agreed and changed him. The patient excitedly leaned on his elbows and stretched his neck as far as he could, trying to look out the window. But he saw a blank wall! Confused, he asked the nurse,
«Excuse me, has something happened to the window that was here? My roommate who passed away used to describe the wonderful things he saw through the window.»
The nurse smiled and kindly said,
«The man that died was blind, so he couldn’t have even seen the wall. It’s very likely he only wanted to cheer you up.»
A true friend knows how to share in your suffering and pain. And he also helps you be happy and makes life easier to bear. True friends are a comfort, a refuge, a space to recharge your batteries. Their influence makes you a better person and leaves a pleasant memory in your heart.
What will you leave behind to your friends? How will they remember you? What will they be left with?
Ask the Lord today to help you improve your friends’ lives.
