MODERN-DAY STORIES
“l will answer them before they even call to me.
While they are still talking about their needs, I will go ahead and answer their prayers!» (Isaiah 65:24).
The house looked neglected. On one side there were abandoned houses, on the other there was an empty corner lot, and in front there was an empty lot next to a state road on which mostly only workers’ trucks passed by, which could be seen far off in the distance.
I was canvassing and wondered if it was really worth it to knock on that door at that hour, because it was very likely there would be no one there or they would be sleeping. But I knocked anyway.
The door opened slowly and as soon as I saw him, I realized the man was drunk He invited me to come in, assuring me he wouldn’t harm me. I thanked him kindly but stood at the door. I wouldn’t be able to give my presentation, but I decided to give him a missionary book as a gift. Suddenly, a man came out from another room and even though I greeted him, it was more of a farewell greeting than one to begin a conversation. They looked at each other, laughed and kept on insisting I go inside. It wasn’t very easy for me to leave… If I kept on walking, I would be alone for many blocks and they could easily overtake me if they wanted to. I didn’t know who to call. I could only pray.
The whole time I lived in that town after that, I never saw any other cars go down that street, but that day, at that instant while I prayed a white car stopped by. It was a woman I had only seen once but who «casually» had something she wanted to tell me right then.
Having the perfect excuse, I left the men to go speak with her, even though I felt two pairs of eyes fixed on my back (‘Get out of here immediately. Those guys are dangerous. They’ve already attacked me a couple of times. Get out now, ‘J the woman told me.
She wasn’t an angel, but I know God sent her to me at that moment as an immediate answer to my prayer. Who are you afraid of today? Pray and remember He answers our prayer even before we call out to Him.
«Thus God’s people, exposed to the deceptive power and unsleeping malice of the prince of darkness, and in conflict with all the forces of evil, are assured of the unceasing guardianship of heavenly angels» (The Truth about Angels, ch. 1, p. 11).
