Adelina and Marta, two teens living in Central America, had to make a decision. Would they defy their parents and keep attending church? They were learning about a God who loved them, and they didn’t want to miss a meeting. Father warned that if they went again, he’d beat them. But hadn’t Jesus faced persecution too? Could they do any less to show their love for their Savior?
Night after night they went. And night after night they were beaten. Before long they couldn’t even sit down at the meetings, their legs so badly bruised by the impact of the dull side of their father’s machete.
«We want to be baptized,» they told the minister. «But don’t tell our parents.»
«They must know,» the preacher explained. «It wouldn’t be right without their knowledge.»
When he and the girls stood before the father, the man was furious. «If you baptize my daughters,» he said, «you’ll feel this!» He held up the sharp end of his machete. Adelina and Marta went to the baptism. So did their parents. So did the machete. When the minister raised his hand to begin the service, the father raised the knife. «Heavenly Father,» the preacher prayed, «help this man to know Thee.» The angry visitor’s hand began to tremble as he watched his first daughter lowered under the water. Suddenly his arm fell to his side, and the machete splashed harmlessly into the river. Unmoving, he watched his second daughter dip under the waves, touched by her determination.
Eventually he and his wife also joined God’s church. The Sword of Truth had faced the sword of vengeance. Truth won. It always does.
