ANXIETY
«A man will be as a hiding place from the wind, and a cover from the tempest, as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land» (Isaiah 32:2).
Timothy M. Samaras was an engineer, researcher and documentary producer on Discovery Channel who was known for his fascination with storms and tornadoes. He was a storm chaser. In his effort to better understand these atmospheric phenomena, he built innovative instruments with National Geographic funds, being the beneficiary of eighteen research grants in his field work. Among his awards, there is the accomplishment of a Guinness World Record for having recorded the greatest pressure drop measured in a tornado in June 2003. Almost a decade later, on the 31st of May 2013, Samaras, his son, and a meteorologist friend recorded a tornado of EF3 category near El Reno, Oklahoma. Unfortunately, they got caught in the tornado whose winds reached 475 km/h (295 mph). They were all killed.
In an effort to better understand the storms of their life, many people make mistakes that are similar to those of the storms chasers. Do you find it wise to measure wind gusts because you are equipped with specialized instruments? Do you think you will come out unharmed if you expose yourself to the fury of nature with all your strength? Do you perhaps believe that your attitude is strong enough to face the storm?
It is true that most people do not go chasing conflicts and storms. Generally, conflicts and storms come unannounced. However, in what way are we going to deal with them?
If there is a reasonable way of facing storms, it is by looking for a safe place where we can be protected. The prophet Isaiah describes Christ as «a hiding place from the wind, and a shelter from the tempest.» Whether we are dealing with inner storms where our thoughts and feelings strike their strongest blows, or outer storms in front of which we feel insignificant, we can rest assured that we can trust God with our lives and patiently wait until the tempest passes.
Just as it is useless to fight against blowing winds or foolish to face storms by ourselves, it is also futile to fight our trials alone or try to understand all their details. You may find that your mind is clouded by pain or blocked by anxiety. In those instances, Don’t think. Just rest in God and demonstrate that you have entrusted Him with your life. After all, it is our privilege to show our faith and, in His love, in the midst of our weaknesses and suffering.
