«This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness (salvation) is from Me»(Isaiah 54:17).
THE WORD «SERVANT» has two different meanings according to Webster’s Dictionary: 1) «a person hired to work in another’s house» and 2) «a person devoted to another.» We see both meanings used in the Bible, although the second meaning is the one I want to highlight today. The first meaning of «servant» in the Bible is used, for example, for Abraham, the first man God called to leave his land and form a special nation; he had «servants born in his house or purchased with his money» (Genesis 17:23, ISV). From the book of Genesis to the New Testament, cases of people who had or were servants are repeated because servitude was a characteristic of the social organization of Bible times.
However, the second meaning of «servant» as «a person devoted to another is the one that has most to do with us today, because God wants to give us that honorary title; He wants to be that «another» to whom we surrender completely and unreservedly. For God, the fact that we are His servants does not have any negative connotation—quite the contrary. He wants to refer to you and me in the same way as He spoke of David: «I have found My servant David» (Psalm 89:20). He wants to have such an encounter with us that, from that moment, we dedicate our lives to His service.
That was what happened to Paul: «Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ» (Romans 1:1), or Moses: «And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward» (Hebrews 3:5). What can you say about yourself? Do you want to be a modern Paul or Moses?
As you know, servants have historically never been heirs of the possessions of their masters. However, in the kingdom of God, those who decide to serve Him by surrendering their lives immediately become heirs of the salvation that He offers us, heirs of all the promises He has made to us in His Word, heirs of the kingdom of heaven and all the beauty it holds. What a tremendous inheritance!
