Love
Denis Diderot (1713-1
784) said that it’s easier for a civilized society to return to barbarism than for a barbaric community to make progress toward civilization. Therefore, developed societies are more inclined to commit the worst acts of savagery. That’s particularly true regarding morality. Year after year, newscasts report the binging of certain young people in tourist centers with scenes that are denigrating to human beings (alcohol, drugs, sex). The funny thing is that many of them are from developed countries. Even locals are impressed by the level of perversion they exhibit. Is it a demonstration of the progress of love or rather a return to a barbaric age?
Love is mentioned everywhere today. But what kind of love are we talking about? Are we condemned to experience half-savage affairs where instinct and reactions are the fundamental basis and source of stability? I don’t think so. A fleeting affair is not the solution to human beings’ complex dilemmas.
The apostle Paul said, «All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any» (1 Corinthians 6:12). Many people don’t know how to use the freedom Jesus obtained for us on the cross at Calvary. The fact that something can be carried out doesn’t mean it’s advisable. Likewise, the Bible says, «Now the body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body» (v. 13). That’s right. God doesn’t give us a body to pervert and degrade it. That’s why he urges us to «Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body» (v. 18). And the fact is our body doesn’t belong to us, «Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore, glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s» (vv. 19, 20).
Ask the Lord to help you respect your body and not defile it with any degrading action. Use it to honor God and serve others.
