THE BIBLE CLEARLY SAYS, «Since poor people won’t cease to exist in the land, I’m commanding you: ‘Be sure to display generosity to your poor and needy relatives in your land’ » (Deuteronomy 15:11, ISV). It also adds that when we do this, we will receive God’s blessing in what we undertake. Obviously, it refers to what we undertake for the advance of His work— in what we do to let the world know that God loves us and wants to save us. God will bless our efforts to live a Christian life if we look at the poor around us and open our hands to help them. What do you think about this challenge? To me, it seems not just a perfect way to live, but a necessary light that shines, showing everyone the kind of people that are needed in the world today.
Our Lord Jesus Christ was rich, yet for our sake He became poor, that we through His poverty might be rich. He bids all whom He has entrusted with temporal blessings to follow His example. Jesus says, «Ye have the poor with you always, and when so ever ye will ye may do them good» (Mark 14:7). The want and wretchedness in the world are constantly appealing to our compassion and sympathy, and the Saviour declares that ministry to the afflicted and suffering is the service most pleasing to Him. «Is it not,» He says, «to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?» (Isaiah 58:7). We are to minister to the sick, to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, and to instruct the ignorant. There are many who complain of God because the world is so full of want and suffering. But the Lord is a God of benevolence, and through His representatives, to whom He has entrusted His goods, He would have all the needs of His creatures supplied. He has made abundant provision for the wants of all, and if men did not abuse His gifts, and selfishly withhold them from their fellow men, none need suffer from want (Ellen G. White, Counsels on Stewardship, ch. 33, p. 161; emphasis is ours).
1) Let us follow His example. 2) Let us serve in the ministry to the afflicted and suffering. 3) Let us not selfishly hold on to our possessions. Amen.
«You shall surely give to him, and your heart should not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing the Lord your God will bless you in all your works and in all to which you put your hand» (Deuteronomy 15:10).
