«Jesus said to them, ‘Have you never read in the Scriptures: «The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. This was the Lord’s doing, And it is marvelous in our eyes»?’ » (Matthew 21:42).
You were not chosen to be part of the team. They rejected your job proposal, your book, or your opinion. Or, at the worst, the man of your dreams decided to marry another woman (or move to Timbuktu to be a missionary and live a celibate life). Few things hurt as much as rejection! Few things make us doubt as much about our value and our beauty. However, perhaps the question we should ask ourselves is not Is there something wrong with me? But Is God protecting me from something? Although not all rejections are due to divine intervention, we often forget that God also guides us by closing doors. Perhaps the rejection you face today is an act of divine generosity. Perhaps God wants to give you something much better than you could imagine.
Last year, my sister lnés came to visit me in England for a few months. Since she is a teacher, we decided to contact an English school so that she could have some experience as a volunteer during her visit. We filled out all the necessary forms, sent the required letters of recommendation, and finally received confirmation from the school. We were super-happy, convinced it would be a fantastic experience! lnés could practice English and learn more about this country’s education system. However, a few weeks before her flight, the school backed out and rejected the request. We didn’t know what had happened and didn’t have enough time to apply to another school. I admit I got frustrated and quite angry. However, through the recommendations of a friend and a chain of small miracles, lnés was accepted into a larger school with children of more varied ages. A school’s unexplained rejection opened the door to a bigger and better opportunity.
Jesus is the Stone rejected by the builders which became the cornerstone. If you face the failure and setbacks in life today, remember that rejection is not a period, just a comma. Have faith and be patient: God is still writing your story!
Dear Lord, I thank You for the times when You allowed me to be rejected— or my plans to be disrupted—in order to protect me or to give me something better. My perspective is limited, so I trust in Your unlimited love and kindness.
