NEVER?

«Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall» (l Corinthians 10: 12).

IF YOU EVER GIVE IN TO TEMPTATION SOME DAY, what do you think would be the sin that would make you fall?

Someone asked a preacher who was visiting a similar question. What did he reply? He said he would never sin in the area of his personal relationships. Several years after that conversation, the man fell into the very sin he thought he would never commit. One decision, seemingly harmless, led to another, and another . . . Without realizing it, he was getting closer and closer to the abyss, until he fell right into the aspect of his life that he considered the safest.

«Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall,» says our text today. How full are the Scriptures of cases that illustrate this great truth! The idea of denying the Lord never crossed the mind of the apostle Peter, but that was exactly what he did. King David, who God said was «a man after My own heart» (Acts 13:22), never imagined that one day he would commit the double sin of adultery and murder. And what about the prophet Elijah? If there was any character trait that identified him, that was his bravery, his fearlessness. However, it was through fear of Jezebel that he fled his post of duty and even came to desire death.

Do we get the idea? Let us never hold on to the idea that there are aspects of our lives in which we will never fall. Why? First, because it is very easy to leave unprotected what we already consider to be strong. Second, because the battle in which we are involved is spiritual in nature. And precisely because it is a spiritual battle, we can only fight it successfully if we depend entirely on Christ, as the following words indicate:

«True safety lies only in the recognition of one’s absolute helplessness apart from Christ; and the constant need of the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.»

Let us not deceive ourselves in thinking that there are aspects of our lives where we will never fall. Rather, let us distrust ourselves and trust the custody of our souls «to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present [us] faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, to God our Savior, Who alone is wise, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. Amen» (Jude 24, 25).

Thank You, heavenly Father, because despite my falls, You have given me a second chance today. Above all, thank You, because in Christ I can find all the strength I need to live in a way that glorifies Your name.
