MERCY AND POWER 

«Mercy and truth preserve the king, and by lovingkindness he upholds his throne»  (Proverbs 20:28). 

David had become the king of Israel after more than ten years of suffering persecution from Saul, his predecessor, who at all costs had wanted to annihilate him. So, once his throne was well-established, Saul’s former collaborators stepped aside, some were even killed. Belonging to the family of the former monarch became a disgrace, since much of his children were killed. However, one day, David learned that one of Jonathan’s children had survived. It was Mephibosheth, a crippled young man who lived in one of the poorest areas of his kingdom. He sent messengers to bring him to his presence. It is possible that the handicapped boy was terrified at the announcement that he was required to appear before the king of Israel. Would he kill him because of his kinship with Saul? What could he obtain from a person like him?

Mephibosheth presented himself at the royal palace. There, David told him that he had been a great friend of Jonathan, his father. So, with regard to him, he would give him special treatment: From that day f0FNard, Mephibosheth would live in the palace and eat at his table; in addition, he would return the possessions that had belonged to his father’s family. Mephibosheth couldn’t believe it! He had come to the presence of David fearful of receiving bad news, but he never imagined hearing such an announcement!

What political benefits did the attitude taken toward Mephibosheth bring to David?

Would it come out in the news, displaying him with a bright smile and shaking hands with the unfortunate boy? It’s very unlikely. Perhaps the monarch gained nothing by benefitting the boy, except to show remarkable mercy toward a person with great needs.

Generosity should be a part of every human being, especially those who take on great responsibilities and leadership positions, no matter how big or simple the results. We must not expect our acts of kindness to bring us some sort of benefit. Rather, compassion is fundamental in the establishment of leadership, as the scripture says: «Mercy and truth preserve the king, and by lovingkindness he upholds his throne» (Proverbs 20:28).

Today ask God to help you cultivate kindness and compassion toward those around you, without expecting to receive anything in return.
