ANXIETY

«This is my anguish; but I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most High” (Psalm 77:10).

Asaph possessed a very distinguished position. As a descendant of Levi, he was one of the Israelites dedicated to God’s service. Specifically, his specialty was the music. He sang in such a way that he mesmerized even the «sweet Psalmist of Israel.» It was precisely King David who named him director of vocal and instrumental music and thus, he was in charge of the special arts and most prominent ceremonies that took place during his reign. When Davi relocated the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, the center of God’s worship, he entrusted Asaph with the music. It is said that Asaph was preaching with his harp, and even if he was considered a visionary man, paradoxically, sometimes his sight failed him.

On one occasion, he noticed that something went wrong. He was passing through a period of anxiety and could not sleep. In his sleepless hours, while thinking about God, his anxiety seemed to increase. He suffered so much that he could hardly breathe; and between whines and tears, he thus babbled, «Will the Lord cast off forever? And will He be favorable no more? Has His mercy ceased forever? Has His promise failed for ever more ? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has He in anger shut up His tender mercies?» (Ps. 77:7-9). However, at the same moment he was about to faint, an idea came to his mind. It is as if he realized that the problem was not on the outside but within him; and he begins to talk to himself by saying, «This is my anguish; but I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most High. I will remember the works of the Lord; surely I will remember Your wonders of old. I will also meditate on all Your work, and talk of Your deeds» (vv. 10-12).In other words, Asaph changed his thoughts and, instead of letting his which imagination get the better of him, he turned his eyes toward those occasions in received proof of God’s love and kindness and toward the powerful and undeniable actions that God had performed on his behalf.

Thus, we invite you today to take a look at those undisputed actions of God’s work in your life. Remember especially the day He showed you His greatest love. Think about the Cross.
