“The lazy man is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who can answer sensibly” (Proverbs 26:16)
One day, a journalist asked the famous singer, Jim Morrison (1943-1971), a vocalist in the legendary group, “The doors”, about his drinking problem. The young man replied:
«When I read that alcohol is a serious drawback for health, I made a very drastic decision: I stopped reading.»
What a brilliant solution! To him, the way to escape his problems was to ignore them, to act as if they didn’t exist and disregard the warnings given to him about a better lifestyle. But that method didn’t give him very good results. Jim wasn’t able to overcome his alcohol addiction and died at the age of 27 in Paris (France) due to a probable heroin overdose, although since there was no autopsy, the cause of death was wrapped in mystery.
Balthasar Graciån (1601-1658), the great writer of the Spanish Golden Age, said, «The first step of ignorance is presuming you know.» There are people who consider they are smarter than the most skilled doctors: Why should they follow their indications to take care of their health? What do those people know about what’s best for them? Why not drink alcohol if their friends say wonderful things about it? They even come to believe doctors exaggerate or don’t know enough about it and know nothing about life. Do you really think that kind of reasoning makes sense? I’ve also known young people who think they know much more than the best drivers, and ask, «Why should we obey traffic signs if it’s so fun to ignore them?»
One of the indicators of an ignorant person is pride. They don’t want to receive advice and they look down on what wise people say. They rather come up with all kinds of ridiculous arguments to defend their irresponsible attitude in life and disdain work opportunities they may have. On the contrary, wise people are extremely humble and ready to receive recommendations that may be given to them, even if they come from humble people. They also keep their eyes open to learn from nature, daily experiences, history, science or art.

Ask the Lord this day to help you have smart attitudes in life and give you an open spirit to learn.
