IF YOU CAN´T GET IT AT HOME, YOU WON´T FIND IT IN SCHOOL EITHER WHAT THE FAMILY DOES NOT GIVE, SCHOOL DOES NOT LEND

EDUCATION

«He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly» (Proverbs 13:24).

The University of Salamanca is the oldest in Spain and one of the first in Europe. To this day it is an educational institution with an enormous prestige and whose library is one of the largest in the whole country. A Latin proverb alludes to this university in terms of the scope of teaching: «What nature does not give; Salamanca does not lend.» These words have often been interpreted as if the lack of intellectual capacity were an inherited matter, but the adage can also be understood in another way: there are things that the university, however good it may be, cannot contribute, such as vocation, intelligence, perseverance, and the enthusiasm to learn. All that has to come from the student. So, if you count on it, you will take good advantage of your higher education.

The truth is that many students come to school without certain elementary virtues that hinder the teaching-learning process, which they should have learned at home. Hence the old proverb can also be applied to the family environment in which a future student grows: «What the family does not give, the school does not lend.»

Many people expect the school to educate their children by trying to get rid of a responsibility that belongs to the family. It is at home that children’s intellectual abilities should be encouraged, and their mental development revived; this is where values such as respect for authority, obedience, and the spirit of cooperation are acquired. Of course, the home is the headquarters where children should go to recharge their energy, receive strategies and all kinds of support to face the struggle for knowledge. But lacking these virtues, it is very likely that many children and young people would not be as fruitful as they would expect during their student years.

But what can be done if your family did not give you such virtues and now, as a student, you discover that you do not have them? This is where the power of God comes in. The Lord promised to send us a great teacher: «However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come» (John 16:13). Yes, He can lead us to all truth in all areas of knowledge. Today, open your. heart to the influence of the Holy Spirit.
