«HE SHALL SUSTAIN YOU»

«Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you». Psalm 55:22

IN AN ARTICLE published in 2021, Dr. Stephen Porges, professor of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina, says «the body and the brain talk to each other—because they regulate each other.» This information is in complete harmony with what Ellen G. White said in 1905: «The influence of the mind on the body, as well as of the body on the mind, should be emphasized.» *

Dr. Porges’s research points out the fact that anxiety is not only a mental state, but a condition that is in our body, in our nervous system. So when our mind and our body combine, they find ways to justify, perpetuate, and give meaning to the anxiety that devastates our soul.

According to Porges, «using higher brain structures—memory, associations, previous learning, contextual learning—we create narratives of worry that attribute the driving force to something external and that literally keep us in this state. Most people find it difficult to separate the worry from the physical disturbance, but it’s possible: Worry is a personal narrative we create in a state of threat to justify why we feel bad.»

So how can we change that narrative? Porges suggests that we should re-educate our nervous system, not only by trying to eliminate what makes us anxious, but by giving our nervous system «cues of safety.

When invaded by discouragement and distress, some look for «cues of safety» from unsafe sources. If we want to give our mind and body genuine sources of safety, the best thing to do is to focus on God’s marvelous promises, starting with today’s verse: «Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you» (Psalm 55:22).

Here are a few others, each one by a different author. «Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you» (1 Peter 5:7, NIV). «So don’t be all upset, always concerned about what you will eat and drink. (For the pagans of this world are always concerned about all these things.) Your Father knows that you need these things» (Luke 12:29, 30, GNT), «Be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, Il will never leave you nor forsake you’ » (Hebrews 13:5).

God will sustain us; He will care for us; He knows what we need and will never leave us. These are promises that provide many «cues of safety.»
