ROCA QUEMADA was our final destination. is where the central church of Kararkicha was located, in the town of Shikiari, where a group of recently-baptized Adventists was meeting. Our arrival was triumphal. The high plain was bathed by the full moon, and the sound of guitars, güiros (instruments made of reeds), and drums welcomed us. It was the way the Cabécares praised the Eternal. We joined them, singing in our language, until al. most midnight.

Our fatigue was such that we were able to sleep on the ground. The sun and the birds awakened our senses at the new dawn. The doctor and nurses of our missionary team began to take care of the more than 100 people who crowded together that morning at the examination room. In addition, we fed them and gave them some clothes we had brought for them. At night, we held an evangelistic campaign. Several souls surrendered to Jesus and were baptized in a beautiful ravine near our camp. I felt that we were doing exactly what the Bible says: healing the sick at the same time that we announced to them the kingdom of God.

In Romans 15:20, Paul said,» It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known» (N IV), and that was exactly what we had been doing in those mountainous areas of Costa Rica. How wonderful it is to feel that God sends us to speak about His love to those who do not know Him yet and to help them enjoy a better lifestyle. Participating in this is a great blessing.

The command to serve God and one’s neighbor continues to be the life purpose for Christians and also their greatest daily challenge. Of course, one does not have to go to distant mountains to do it; what we need is to find practical ways by which we can make a difference in the lives of the people around us to lead them to the Savior. Talk less; do more. Do more things like ironing, cleaning, and cooking for someone who is going through a difficult time; helping a young person who has problems in school; taking everything that you do not use out of the closet to give it to someone who would; being a mentor for someone young and helping him or her grow in the faith; beginning Bible studies at home . . . Find the ways and get into action because He is the One who is sending you.
