«You are fairer than the sons of men; grace is poured upon Your lips; therefore God has blessed You forever» (Psalm 45:2).
IN JUNE 2020, a flight catastrophe almost took place at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. According to a report published by CNN. the air-traffic controller had authorized an airplane to take off and another one to land on the same runway. The United Airlines inbound flight from Newark, New Jersey, was to land on runway 09L; while EasyJet’s airplane, bound for Malaga, Spain, was to take off from runway 09R.
Unfortunately, the controller had a brief mental lapse and switched the «L» for an “R.” This made the United Airlines plane go to the same runway from which EasyJet’s plane was to take off. Luckily, when the airplanes were about three hundred yards from each other, the plane that was going to land was able to make an excellent maneuver and ascend again. One «corrupt word» could have caused the death of hundreds of people.
Paying attention to details is so important! In fact, there’s a well-known proverb that says «the devil is in the details.» Sometimes we disregard how important it is to be mindful of the small things that seem of little worth. A word, even a letter, is able to end the lives of many people. A simple slip of the tongue could produce an unimaginable tragedy. Therefore, it’s vital that we pay attention to what we say and how we say it. As an editor, I’m well aware of the power of letters and words; however, as a human being full of weaknesses, I have found myself countless times having little regard for that power.
The words given to believers in the city of Colosse are more meaningful today than ever: «Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt» (Colossians 4:6). And Ephesians 4:29 adds, «Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.» Words with grace that communicate grace—there’s a solemn challenge for us!
Today’s verse affirms that God poured out His grace upon the lips of His Anointed. And if we ask Him to do the same for us today, to pour His grace upon our lips, then not even a small letter will come out of us that will put the lives of those who hear us at risk.
