«And the king said to her, ‘Do not be afraid. What did you see?’ And the woman said to Saul, ‘I saw a spirit ascending out of the earth'» (1 Samuel 28:13).
In his anguish, Saul consulted with a Witch, one of those he had eliminated from the region, but not from his heart. Knowing what is right and condemning what is wrong does not replace doing what is right. When difficulties come, turn towards God, and depend solely on Him. Any Other resource will lead you to disaster.
Spiritism, witchcraft, divination, consulting with the dead, and everything related to Occultism has been forbidden by God (see Deuteronomy 18:9-14). God did not respond to Saul (see I Samuel 28:6) because Saul did not like God’s responses; or, knowing that Saul would not accept any message contrary to his own wishes, God preferred to remain silent and let Saul reap the consequences of his actions. If he had had a humble attitude, God would have converted his faults into stepping stones taking him to success. But Saul, in his rebellion, consulted with a medium to speak with Samuel, who had died years before.
When he was alive Samuel, Saul’s mentor and guide had made several predictions that brought Saul much joy at the beginning Of his reign; but when power and despotism engulfed him, Saul’s respect for God’s counsel slowly diminished. Driven out of his mind by the heavenly silence, Saul looked wherever he could, at any price, for a favorable answer.
The practitioners of occultism have Satan as a source of information; God does not reveal His will to them. God has his own channels Of information: the Bible, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Some hold that evidently Saul spoke with Samuel, because the spirit revealed what was going to happen. If Samuel, who had died, had spoken to Saul, it would have been a message from God, and the Bible explains in 1 Chronicles 10:13, 14: «so Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he had committed against the Lord, because he did not keep the word of the Lord, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance. But he did not inquire of the Lord; therefore He killed him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse» Why would he die if he was consulting God? «What path so dark for human feet to tread as that chosen by one who has persisted in having his own way, resisting the holy influences of the Spirit of God! What bondage so terrible as that of him who is given over to the control of the worst of tyrants—himself!”-Patriarchs and Prophets, ch. 66, p. 676.
