“He restores my soul; tie leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sole”
(Psalm 23:3).
My neighbor Rox has a bichon frise dog. His name is Radley and he is a ball of curly white hair (he looks more like a sheep than a dog). Because Rox has joint problems and can’t walk long distances, she asked me to help her by taking her dog for a walk. I said yes excitedly. I love dogs. Besides, how hard could it be to take a little bichon frise for a walk?
The first sign of trouble was how difficult it was for us to put the harness on him. Radley is so plump that we hardly got it on him; he looked like a sausage tied with a string. However. when we finally set out on our way, I became convinced that everything would be alright. I was so wrong! There are five or six blocks from Rox’s house to the park, but by the time we got there, Radley was already panting. After walking a few minutes in the park, he sat down and looked at me with a face that said, “I’m not moving from here.” The walk should have taken us thirty or forty minutes, but it took almost an hour and a half because Radley refused to keep moving. I encouraged him as if I were his personal trainer: “Come on, Radley, y0u Can do it!” People looked at us with laughter and disbelief, but, mercifully, without saying a word. At the end of the walk, I felt like I was dragging a barrel across the floor rather than taking a dog for a walk. I compassionately tried to carry him in my arms, but Radley is an independent dog and he wouldn’t let me. Finally, we got back to Rox’s house: Radley, exhausted from the walk; I, that he wouldn’t let me help him.
How many times God wants to guide us and we resist, like Radley! The road exhausts us, the leash squeezes us, and we just want to rest. We can waste forty years like this on a walk of only eleven days (Deuteronomy 1:2, 3). However, the good Shepherd never abandons us! He patiently continues to guide us for His name’s sake (Psalm 23:3). As much as we resist His arms or dig in our heels, the good Shepherd does not walk away.
Let us stop resisting and wasting time: let Jesus guide us.
Dear lord, I confess that I often behave like Radley:
I resist being guided and try la do things my way (wasting time and energy).
today/ want to let You guide me. I want to learn to trust you more.
Please give me Your meekness to follow you humbly during these twenty-four hours.
