«So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ» (Romans 10:17, NLT).
The Bible does not mention the name of the woman who was suffering from constant blood flow. What it does tell us is that she did everything that was humanly possible in order to be healed. Unfortunately, treatments in her days were nothing less than superstitions and many charlatans gladly took her money, only to make her situation worse. According to the Talmud, some «remedies» in her days included: that the woman sit at a crossroads with a cup of wine in her hand and that someone, from behind, scare her; drinking boiled wine with roots and vegetables; digging seven holes in the ground and burning grape vines in them. Imagine the poor woman’s emotions! Every time she gathered courage and money for a new «treatment,» she was disappointed. Some of my friends have been trying to conceive for years. Although treatments are often painful and imply a high cost, the emotional cost is the hardest. It is so hard to believe again!
This woman had probably resigned herself, but then she heard about Jesus and
His miracles. Like a little flame, faith sparked in her heart again. Every time she heard something else about the Master, the flame grew, until her heart was totally on fire. Full of sacred boldness, she went into the multitude to do what was absolutely forbidden: to touch Jesus. The Bible says that, as soon as she touched His robe, «immediately the bleeding stopped» (Mark 5:29, NCI).
The woman’s faith was renewed when she heard about Jesus. It is likely that those who said those words had no clue what impact they would have. Nevertheless, they changed the woman’s life. Today we have the same opportunity! Although she often does not notice it, my friend Anne revives my faith with her words. When I have days in which I want to give up or quit, she reminds me of everything God has done for me. When I hear her, I feel as if someone were softly fanning the coals of my faith. Faith comes from hearing. Let us share hope-filled words!
Father, it is so hard to believe again after so many disappointments.
It is less painful to give up and stop dreaming. If someone today is in need of words of comfort and hope, I ask that You use me. Give me words of wisdom at the right time. May Your Spirit blow, with every word, and revive their faith.
