«DOWN TO THE LAST LETTER»

«Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed» (Joshua 23: 14, NIV).

AMONG THE GREAT LEADERS MENTIONED IN SCRIPTURE, if anyone had reason to boast, it was Joshua, the son of Nun. A quick glance at his service record is enough to prove it.

Joshua played a defining role in defeating the Amalekites; he accompanied Moses at Sinai when God gave him the tables of the law; he was part of the group of leaders Moses sent to explore the Promised Land; and, as a military strategist, he defeated thirty-one heathen kings. As if that were not enough, he introduced Israel into Canaan and directed the distribution of land among the twelve tribes.

It is enough to make anyone proud! However, what does Joshua talk about in his farewell speech (see Joshua 23 and 24)? About his achievements? About his personal abilities? Does he suggest building a monument in his honor? None of that! Instead, he talks about God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises, as today’s verse points out. If you read chapter 24, you will notice it talks about serving God wholeheartedly; and setting aside heathen gods. And he ends by asking the people: «Whom will you serve? The heathen gods that have only been a stumbling block; or the God who has brought us this far?»

In the end, he built a monument, not in his honor, but rather as a memorial of the covenant of faithfulness between God and His people (Joshua 24:25—27). No wonder the Bible says Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua (v. 31)!

What was the secret of this hero of faith? A very simple one, which is available to us today: Joshua believed God’s promises. God promised him he would inherit the land of Canaan, he would defeat his enemies, and that He would always be with him (Joshua 1:3—5). All that was fulfilled! How could Joshua descend to his grave without publicly testifying of God’s faithfulness?

Today is a good day to praise God for His faithfulness. One way of doing that is by remembering our favorite Bible promises. As for me, today I want to remember Psalm 32:8: «I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.»

What will you remember? Whatever your situation may be today, whatever challenges you may have to face, claim your favorite promise in Jesus’s name. And expect great things from the God who keeps His promises «down to the last letter.»

I praise You, Father, because You are faithful.
May Your promises be fulfilled in my life, at the right time and according to Your will.
