TODAY’S VERSE has a deep dimension because it is Jesus who is talking, and He is telling us that in the last days, people will marry and be given in marriage, just as happened in the days of Noah. Marriage becomes, then, a revealing factor of the times in which we are living. It is obvious that the divorce rate in the West is extremely high at the present time. According to statistics, it is forty-eight percent in first marriages and sixty-five percent in second marriages among the general population. However, it would be naive on our part to judge the general population, thinking that «they are Sodom and Gomorrah» and not realizing what is happening in our congregations. Being sensitive to this topic is important if we want to offer help to those who are suffering, rather than offering social condemnation and omission.
Divorce cannot be reduced to an event in the life of a person: it is a chain OF emotional, psychological, social, and spiritual events that leave a devastating trail: broken or changed relationships, dysfunctional families, poverty, instability, disease, and so on. Divorce is a long process that leaves terrible consequences:
It alters the family structure, creating conflicts and dividing loyalties.
It causes trauma—psychological and emotional—through the sense of failure and loss that it entails. Deception, bitterness, loneliness, depression, low self-esteem, and a feeling of abandonment are frequently found in people who are going through a process of divorce. The resulting stress debilitates their immune system, leaving them more vulnerable to physical and mental diseases.
It impoverishes ex-spouses, which has a direct impact on their lifestyle and level of well-being, as well as that of the children they have in common. Sometimes, divorce means moving, which means that it also changes the people with whom the family members interact socially.
It affects the children, who are the innocent victims of a divorce, impacting above all their sense of belonging, securi9′, and self-esteem.
What will we do as church members to help all those people who are going through hard times because divorce has come into their lives? It would be good Gr us to have a little sensitivity toward them.
«And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage» (Luke 17:26, 27).
