«Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you» (1 Peter 5:7, NLT).
Vanessa, I don’t know how to live without worrying about money,» my friend told me. «I manage our finances at home and I pay the bills. I have to think about it and stretch our tiny budget. I don’t know how to do it without worrying!» In personal finances, it is hard to find a balance, to plan and make decisions about the future without worrying.
One day, my sister lnés told me something interesting about worry: «Worrying is like checking in your baggage at the airport.» You go up to the counter with your suitcases and lift them up to the scale. The employee puts a label on them and you trust they will reach their final destination. You do not see what happens in between. You simply have faith. You know you cannot board the airplane with your suitcases; you have to let them go.
Thus, in the same way, we should check our worries in with God. He cannot take us to our destination if we insist on carrying our problems along. If today you realize you are taking up a problem you have already surrendered to God in prayer, imagine you are at an airport. Imagine it in great detail! You are standing in front of the counter and let go of your suitcase. Minutes later, you see it going off on the luggage belt. It is no longer in your hands, but in God’s hands. Practice this exercise as many times as you need.
Sometimes, we do not want to let go of a suitcase because we feel that when we carry it we are controlling the situation. Worrying gives us a false sense of doing something. Faith, in this context, implies accepting there are many things out of our reach or control. Letting go of our worries does not imply we no longer care about anything, or want to do our part. Letting go means we accept our finiteness, our role, our place in the universe. We are not God, there are things we cannot and should not control.
Just as you let go of your suitcase at an airport, God wants you to let go of your emotional baggage and to place them in His hands.
Jesus, help me to trust in You. Today I want to surrender my worries to You and to trust that You are in charge of my life.
