CARRYING MY STORY

«Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest» (Matthew 11:28).

I AM ALMOST CERTAIN that those who have taken a plane ride have seen someone carrying a huge backpack onboard. What surprises me IS that as this person walks down the narrow aisle of the aircraft, all he cares about is getting to his seat quickly, not even thinking that his luggage is hitting the passengers who are seated. It seems that his backpack is something alien to him. If he turns to the right he hits those seated on the left, and if he turns to the left, he hits those on the right.

These kinds of incidents make me think about the journey each person takes through life. We all carry a story as luggage: experiences, disappointments, frustrations, anger, joy, pain, disenchantment, successes, broken illusions, dreams fulfilled, failures, etc. Most likely some of us carry extra weight, and as we come across other travelers, we might move around hitting them unintentionally. We don’t even turn around to see the wake of pain we leave behind as we walk by.

Carrying unnecessary weight in the backpack of life depletes our physical, emotional, and spiritual strength. Accumulated adverse experiences can take the form of resentment, bitterness, and guilt, which make us vulnerable and easy prey to discouragement, leading us to distrust God’s care and love.

Dear friend before you continue your journey through life today, check your luggage and discard what prevents you from moving freely. Don’t continue to pass on blame, don’t defend yourself against those who love you, don’t waste the restoring power of God. It’s at your fingertips today, you just have to ask for it in a sincere prayer. And when you do it, acknowledge your grudges and resentments. Tell God the names of the people who caused you harm, be genuine. God understands and does not judge you; He is there, near you, to heal and bandage your wounds.

Work with God on those bitter memories that enslave your mind and make your body sick. Think of the Lord’s mercies and the names of the good people who have been with you in spite of yourself. Lighten your burden, change the way you remember the bad times of the past, and move toward God’s glorious future for you, taking advantage of the opportunities of the present. May you have a happy journey.
