«Behold, Gad is my salvation;
I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is
my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation “
(Isaiah 12:2, KJ V).
This short song of thanksgiving is very appropriate after presenting the Messiah freeing the righteous from the hands of their oppressors.
The six verses that make up Isaiah 12 are presented as a parenthesis to praise God between the prophecy of the New Earth in the previous chapter and the description of the destruction of Babylon in the following chapter. Singing is a way of not only facing fear, but of freeing us from it.
‘We should praise God for the blessed hope held out before us in the great plan of redemption, we should praise Him for the heavenly inheritance and for His rich promises; praise Him for that Jesus lives to intercede for us . . . All the inhabitants of heaven unite in praising God. Let us learn the song of the angels now, that we may sing it when we join their shining ranks.“—Patriarchs and Prophets, ch. 25, p. 289.
Each person can be guided to overcome their fears based on Bible texts: examine the fear, expose it, and fight against it or confront it. One of the most effective forms of fighting against our fears is praise and gratitude. ‘If there were more of praise among the people of God there would be less discouragement and faultfinding. It is the man who fails to remember the wonderful mercies of Heaven who is the most likely to forget God. The deeds of mercy on the part of God toward His children are without number. Then why not remember them and sing praises to the Lord for His excellent mercies. Song drives away discouragement, fear, and temptation, and fortifies the soul against the wiles of the devil “—SDA Bible Commentary, vol. 4, p. 162. If we stop praising and thanking God, we forget about Him and about reverencing Him. If this happens, the enemy will come to us bringing his evil weapon: fear.
‘Behold your Helper, Jesus Christ. Welcome Him, and invite His gracious presence. Your mind may be renewed day by day, and it is your privilege to accept peace and rest, rise above worries, and praise God for your blessings. Do not erect barriers of objectionable things to keep Jesus away from your soul. Change your voice; repine not; let gratitude be expressed for the great love of Christ that has been and is still being shown toward you.»—find, Character, and Personality, vol. 1, ch. 8, p. 68.
