Chile is a prosperous South American country filled with modern cities and rich farmland. But not long ago something happened under the earth that affected the lives of thousands of Chile’s citizens, three of whom were named Don, Pedro, and Mr. Henrico.
Don and Pedro had heard about God’s love from a preacher who also warned that our old world is getting more unstable as the time for Christ’s return nears. Scientists had sent warnings about the tension building up between two giant earth plates running under their country. «They’re pushing against each other,» the researchers had said. «Something has to give.
“When the earthquake struck, Don and Pedro rushed out of their house and were terrified to see buildings collapsing and a crack forming down their street.
Mr. Henrico was a wealthy man. When the ground began to tremble, he ran around his house collecting valuables and stuffing them into a suitcase. When one filled up, he grabbed another. Soon he was huffing and puffing toward the front door, trying to drag his two suitcases to safety. But there simply wasn’t enough room for him and his possessions to slip through.
The town rested on the Pacific coast. The shaking ground emptied the beaches, but the water soon returned in the form of a giant wave that crashed down on the hapless man as he struggled to get out of his house. Don and Pedro saw it happen from higher ground. The boys shook their heads, remembering the words of the preacher, «What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?» (Mark 8:36).
