«Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1).
EDGAR ALLAN POE, the prominent nineteenth-century American author, wrote a short story that serves as a good illustration Of the terrible state of those who live with a guilt complex. In his story «The Tell-Tale Heart,» Poe narrates in vivid detail the assassination of a humble Old man. The assassin, who considered himself «terribly nervous,» admitted he had no motive to kill the old man, but one night he could not bear the temptation and brutally killed him without any warning.
Close to 4:00 a.m., three policemen came to the house. The assassin welcomed the agents courteously, assured them everything was alright, and invited them to come in and check every comer of the house. After taking a look around and finding that everything was in order, nothing was out of place, and all the old gentleman’s belongings were still there, the agents were chatting at ease when the assassin began to feel strange.
He felt «a low, dull, quick sound—much such a sound as a watch makes when enveloped in cotton.»‘ He was the only one who could hear the sound that became more and more unbearable and high-pitched. The insufferable, deafening echo led the assassin to confess his crime, because what he heard was supposedly the beating of the old man’s hideous heart.
But no, it wasn’t the old man’s heart that betrayed the assassin; it was the darkness of his own soul, the feeling of inner filth, the overwhelming sound that comes from within those who have done something evil and leads them to demonic restlessness.
The prophet says, ‘The wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt ‘There is no peace: says my God. ‘for the wicked’ “(Isaiah 57:20, 21). However, if when we realize that our heart betrays us, that guilt gallops at full speed within us, we turn to our God and confess our sins, we will find the peace forgiveness offers. As David said, «Happy are those whose sins are forgiven, whose wrongs are pardoned. Happy is the one whom the Lord does not accuse of doing wrong» (Psalm 32:1, 2, GNT).
“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ» (Romans 5;1). If we confess our sins, we will experience that peace today.
