THROUGH THE STORM

«Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age» (Matthew 28:20).

I DO NOT LIKE MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS, but every time 1 go to my doctor’s office, I see a sign that says, «Don’t tell God how big your problems are. Tell your problems how big your God is.»

Not long ago, I read a story by Robert Schuller that reminded me of that sign. The story had to do with Hazel, a woman who liked to sing, but who had a lot of difficulty staying on the right note. Despite this limitation, she joined the church choir, but soon had to leave because, well she was out of tune.

Schuller said that shortly before this choir experience, Hazels mother had died. While she took care of her for years, Hazel did not go out with friends; nor did she participate in the typical youth activities. Therefore, she never got married. When she was about sixty years old, with no close relatives, no money, and not having fulfilled her dreams, it was not surprising that Hazel felt very unhappy. Alone, in the shabby apartment where she lived, she wondered if her life had any meaning.

One day, when Hazel left the apartment, she learned that an unkempt, longhaired, big-bearded young man had moved into the building. She had heard several tenants talk about the need to reinforce the locks as a protective measure.

One night, when Hazel was returning home, she saw a suspicious-looking man. «Is he the hippie?» she wondered. With her heart beating fast, all Hazel could think of was to sing «You never walk alone»: «When you walk through the storm/ Keep your head up high/ And don’t be afraid of the dark . . .» When she finally arrived at her apartment, she thanked God for having taken care of her.

The next day, Hazel found a note on her door. The hippie had written it, saying, «I don’t know who you are, but I want to thank you for singing to me last night. I had already decided to kill myself when I heard that I never walk alone. You saved my life. Now I’m going to another city where I know I will get the kind of work I need. Thank you. Goodbye.»

Was it that that night, for the first time in her life, that Hazel was able to sing well? Probably not. As she later recounted, she was not even sure she had correctly remembered the words of the song; however, God used her to save that young man’s life!

Are you, right now, walking through the storm? If so, remember that you never walk alone. When you walk out of your door today, keep your head up high and face your challenges with the certainty that God is with you.
Dear Father, thank You for promising to be with me every day until the end of the world.
