WHERE DID GOD PUT YOU?

“Indeed, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel” (2 Kings 5:15)

SHE WAS YOUNG, INEXPERIENCED, and a slave in a strange land. We do not even know her name; however, instead of allowing adversity to make her bitter, this girl rose above her circumstances, and through her faith, she set in motion a chain of events that, in the end, served to glorify the name of God. Who are we talking about?

We are talking about the young Israelite girl who served as a slave in the house of Naaman, the general of the Syrian armies. This young woman had been captured by a gang of marauders and had then been taken to Syria where she had become the property of Naaman’s family. In such circumstances, what could she expect from life? Not much, right? However, there are people who, instead of asking what they can expect from life, prefer to ask what life expects from them.

Far from her home and with everything against her, this girl did not pass up the opportunity to witness about the true God. When she learned that her master, Naaman, had leprosy, she told the wife: “If only my master were with the prophet who is in Samaria! For he would heal him of his leprosy” (2 King 5:3).

What nobility of character! Instead of wishing ill for her master, to whom she was a servant, this young woman cared about his well-being. And instead of denying her faith because of being a slave in a strange land, she remained firm to her loyalty to the God of Israel and His prophet. The result of her short but effective witness made the light of hope shine again in Naaman’s heart.

As surprising as the above is the fact that Naaman would accept the young woman’s suggestion, in the sense of going to Elisha, God’s prophet in Samaria. The rest of the story is familiar: not very willingly, Naaman dipped seven times in the Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean” (v. 14).

What impression did the miracle that restored him to health make on Naaman? Today’s verse gives the answer: “Now I know,” Naaman said to Elisha, “that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel” (v. 15).

Is there a lesson for us? Of course! No matter where we are or how adverse our circumstances seem to be, there is always something we can do to help someone in need; and, above all, to glorify the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Where has God put you? And what are you doing to make Him known to those around you?

Dear heavenly Father, today I want to take advantage of the opportunities this day provides me to glorify Your holy name wherever I am. I want others to know that, besides being powerful, You are also an infinitely loving and merciful God.
