«The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want» (Psalm 23:1).
Those four words seemed to make fun of me. They looked at me from the pages of my Bible as an unsolved conundrum. What do you mean, «l shall not want,» Lord? I’ve been praying for years for a partner who hasn’t arrived. I have friends who can’t get pregnant and family members who continue to struggle with serious health problems. How can you say we shall not want?
Sometimes we approach Jesus because we want to receive bread and fish. Jesus knows that we need them to live, but He also knows that if we only care about bread and fish, we lose the Bread of Life. If God’s menu for your future only has Jesus, would you still sit at the table?
«The part that we do not want to hear,» says Christian author Stormie Omartian in her book Praying God’s Will for Your Life, «is that there comes a time when each of us must put his desires and dreams in God’s hands so that He can deliver us from those that are not His will. . If you have always had a certain picture of what you think you should be, you have to be willing to let that image be destroyed. If it’s really what God wants for you, He will empower you to do that and much more. If it isn’t, you are going to be frustrated as long as you cling to it.»
In the end, it’s a matter of trust. If we believe that God is generous and does not deny good things to His daughters, then we can give Him our dreams. We can put them on the altar with shaky hands. We can see them die, knowing that we will not lack anything because we do not live only by bread, but by every word that comes out of the mouth of God.
Heavenly Father, thank You because You are a generous God.
You gave me Your Son, Jesus, proving that You would never deny me anything good, no matter how much it costs You. Help me trust in Your love and wisdom.
Help me desire Your presence in my life more than any other blessing. Teach me to seek the Bread of Life more than bread and fish.
I put my dreams and longings in the hands of Jesus.
When I’m afraid or in doubt, let me see the marks of the nails, the guarantee of His love.
