“My beloved spoke, and said to me:
‘Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.
For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone.
The flowers appear on the earth’ ”
(Song of Solomon 2:10—12).
ONCE I SPENT several days away from home and it happened that it did not rain at all during my absence. The plants in the garden withered and bent over because of their own weight. The abundant water 1 poured over them when 1 returned and the sun were enough to revive them. Watering plants and allowing them to get lights is the way to take care of them.
The love of a couple is very often said to be like a plant that needs to be cared for; it seems to me that it is an accurate comparison. In the first years of marriage, delightful emotions are irrepressible; we live with the person we love and we are thrilled to be near each other. With the passing of time, we create a routine that sometimes, from the emotional viewpoint, drives the two people, little by little, away from each other. Furthermore, the emotional and pleasant moments of the first years are fewer and more spaced apart. It is then when mutual criticism arises, the level of negativity in- creases, blaming sets in and we begin to think that our spouse isn’t what we had hoped. It becomes clear that the marriage is drying up and needs water and light.
How is the relationship of a couple watered? With attention; passion; determination; respect; lowering the level of expectations; suggesting, in- stead of giving orders; and much more sacrifice. And all this, by both par- ties. The attentions of courtship can now be more open and pleasant; the passion and physical attraction can now be expressed more intensely since the couple has a sense of mutual belonging without limits, granted by God at the moment of the marriage ceremony.
The admiration and recognition of each other also waters love. Keeping a positive attitude when disagreements arise, overlooking mistakes, and offering forgiveness are the perfect watering elements for the best feelings, most gratifying emotions and the wish to be happy and make the other person blossom.
So far, we have been studying about watering the plant of love.
What about light? The light is God. Go to Him in prayer and ask Him to illuminate you with the best rays of the sun of righteousness so you and your husband can go back to blossoming in love.
