VALUES
«Keep me from the traps they have set for me, from the snares of those who do wrong»
Psalm 141:9.
He sat on the curb, rested his elbows on his knees and buried his chin in his hands. I watched from the window. He was frustrated by something that seemed insignificant to me but had turned his world upside down right then.
A few seconds prior to that, he had been playing with his friends as usual in the street that separates his house from mine. Their games and laughter reminded me of my childhood afternoons, and their innocent banter made me smile.
But things suddenly changed. Their games stopped and gave way to fighting. Then I heard him pleadingly yell, «Don’t be a cheeeeater. »
There was clearly no apology and the game ended. Each participant went off in different directions and silence reigned in the street, but there was also tension. That silence sparked my curiosity and made me peek through the window. There he was, inconsolable, sitting on the curbside.
Cheating hurts, even (and mostly) if it’s between children.
When I saw him, I thought of all the times I had cheated on little things and bigger things too. Cheating that maybe only God saw, but in the end they resulted in momentary or lasting pain for others and myself.
The truth is it’s very easy to deceive and very hard to acknowledge it. There’s cheating in games, cheating at work, cheating in unperfected love, and even cheating in religion.
I don’t know what your temptation is today, what cheating you’re planning on carrying out, even if you think it’s mostly «innocent» or that it may even pass off as something that’s done «unconsciously.))
«If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness» (1 John 1:8, 9).
Let’s pray that the traps we face today will not be an obstacle but rather a reason to run to Him who is Faithful and True.
The following day, the curbside was empty and a noisy street spoke of reconciliation.
Just like the curbside, may your heart and mine be clean.
