«Salvation is to be found through Him alone; in all the world there is no one else whom God has given who can save us». Acts 4:12, GNT
AT THE BASE of a statue, a Greek inscription was found which said, «The people of Mallos [honor] Demeas, son of Hermocrates, who has been a public benefactor and who has held public office for the salvation of the people.» * In Greco-Roman literature many were given the title of «savior.»
Salvation could come through people like Demeas, but it was also manifested by the gods, kings, philosophers, wealthy individuals, doctors, generals, priests … However, in Christian literature things are entirely different from its Greco-Roman counterpart.
In the New Testament, every reference to salvation is restricted exclusively to Christ and God. One of the most meaningful statements in this regard was the one Mary made. When Elizabeth considered her as «blessed . . among women» and «blessed,» Mary declared, «My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; for behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed. For He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name» (Luke 1:46-49). Mary echoes what the prophet had declared: «Therefore I will look to the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me» (Micah 7:7).
Mary’s praise, in which she magnifies God and acknowledges Him as her Savior, is followed by an expression of humility: «He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant.» Mary’s «lowly state» has to do with her condition as a humble woman, who was not someone important in social circles of her days, who felt unworthy of being the Messiah’s mother. But the Almighty did «great things» through that simple woman.
The powerful God who acted in Mary and saved her is now ready to do great things in your life. And the greatest one is to save you. As Acts 4:12 says, «Salvation is to be found through Him alone; in all the world there is no one else whom God has given who can save us» (GNT).
Our only Savior is our Lord Jesus Christ—not Mary, nor Elizabeth, only Christ.
