«He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, ‘O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will’ » (Matthew 26:39).
The more we pay for advice, the more likely we are to hear it,» American missionary Elisabeth Elliot wrote in God’s Guidance. «A friend’s advice, which is free, can be taken or left. The advice of a consultant, to whom we have paid a great deal, is likely to be accepted; however, it’s still our decision: we can take it or leave it. God’s guidance is different. First, we do not approach God for advice, but to know His will (and this is not optional). And God’s rate is the highest: it costs us everything. Asking for God’s guidance requires us to surrender. We no longer say, «If I trust You, You will give me this and that.» Instead, we must say, «I trust You. Give me or take away what You choose.»
God is worthy of our obedience and trust beyond what He gives us or chooses not to give us. Whether we have a husband, children, and health or are single, infertile, and sick, God is still seated on His throne. Trusting in God unconditionally is the price we must «pay» to live in His will. Unconditional trust is what we need to keep from running away when plans don’t go as we expected. Elisabeth Elliot learned this through her own experience. Jim, her husband, was murdered during his missionary work in Ecuador when their daughter was just ten months old. Elisabeth’s faith and absolute trust in God’s plan took her back to Ecuador years later to complete the task her husband had begun.
It was Jesus’ absolute trust in the will of the Father that made our salvation possible. By saying, «Not as I will, but as You will,» Jesus accepted the cross, and with the wood, He built a bridge between heaven and earth. I want to have a faith like that! I service and trust Him fully, give me what He will and ask of me what He will.
Lord, please reveal Your love and character to me so intensely that trusting in You is the only logical option. I want to submit to Your will completely because I know who You are beyond all circumstances. I thank You because Your Spirit helps me my weaknesses! Amen.
