YOUR FIRST LOVE

«I have this against you, that you have left your first love.

Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent» (Revelation 2:4,5)

AN ANCIENT STORY SAYS that a beautiful princess was looking for a husband. All the wealthy and powerful single men in the kingdom asked to be considered as possible candidates, and they arrived to visit the princess with jewels and gifs to win her over. However, joining all of them, a young poor man came up and said to her, “Your highness, I am in love with you. I know that I have no material goods to offer you, but if you give me the chance, I will demonstrate my love I am going to spend the next hundred days here, under your window, without any food other than the rain and without any clothes other than what I am wearing.»

The princess, moved by that test of love, decided to accept the proposal. So it was that the hours and the days passed by, and the young candidate remained out there, exposed to the elements, putting up with the wind, the rain, and the cold of night. Everything was apparently going well, but to the princess’s surprise, when there was just one hour left for the agreed time period to end, the young man got up and, giving no explanation, prepared to leave. The princess interrupted him with a question: «Why are you leaving without finishing the test of love that you yourself proposed?’

«Because you did not spare me even one single hour of suffering, and I do not see myself able to continue loving such a woman.»

The young man had lost his first love for the princess. How is your love experience with the Lord going? Is it possible that you have lost that first love that you once experienced? Could the time that has passed since then cooled your relationship? Perhaps you have had to suffer bad experiences in the church that have discouraged you; perhaps your way of living your religion has become a habit deprived of passion; perhaps the material comforts you enjoy have made you think you do not need God. If you identify with one of these situations, the following words are for you: «Remember from where you have fallen and repent.»

Remember how beautiful life was when God was the center? You can go back to that point. Ask the Lord to help you feel true repentance for having moved away and remember all that you have forgotten at this time:

His death on the cross for you and His promises of salvation.
