«I decided there is nothing better than to enjoy food and drink and to find satisfaction in work. Then I realized that these pleasures are from the hand of God» (Ecclesiastes 2:24, NLT).
THERE ONCE WAS A BOY whose greatest desire was to have a rocket with which to play. He loved everything that had to do with space and imagined that he was an astronaut who was going to the moon. Unfortunately, his parents did not have money to buy him his longed-for rocket. One day, the boy found thrown out on the street the packaging box of one of those rockets he wanted so much, and he ran out to get it. How disappointed he was when he held it in his hands and saw that it was empty. However, there was an illustration of the rocket on the box, so he cut out the cardboard and put it up on the wall of his room. Later, he added a beautiful space scene that he himself made from cardboard, materials he would find in the trash, and papers of many colors.
When his friend entered his room, he was fascinated with the spectacular artwork. He was so impressed that he decided to give his friend his toy rocket in exchange for the wall decoration. The boy accepted the exchange, but discovered some time later that he had made a mistake. Flhe happiness he had felt in decorating his wall had completely vanished. The toy did not give him even half the satisfaction. The effort, persistence, determination, excitement, hope, and motivation he had put into the work of his hands were, in reality, his happiest moment.
I believe that same thing happens to us with the work of our hands: what we do to earn a living or the tasks we perform in our homes every day without economic remuneration. We can get happiness from it if we do it with joy in our hearts. I know that it can sound like an ideal that is impossible to fulfill, but there is a lot that you can do to move in that direction. First, you can inspire yourself with what you do; then you can put in effort, persistence, determination, and motivation. And if the environment that surrounds you is cold and distant, perhaps you can do your bit to help by bringing open-mindedness, courtesy (yes, though it is difficult to believe, sometimes businesses may be lacking good manners), and the greatest professionalism possible.
Do everything in your power in such a way that you may enjoy the fruits of your work.
