My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways» (Proverbs 23:26)
I PROMISED MY DAUGHTER that if she recovered from the burns she suffered on her legs, I would shave my head in thankfulness to my god,» explained Mala, a woman from India. She was one of the thousands of women who arrive every week at the Tirupati Temple to have their heads shaved as a sign of offering to their god. Within a few minutes, long locks of hair fall to the floor, along with the tears of the children who do not want to have their heads shaved, either. However, for the mothers who make that decision, what they are doing is good: they are offering their god the best that they have: their hair. They are doing it to demonstrate their gratitude and their love.
This is not the type of offering that God asks of us. The offering that He wants is our heart. He wants us to give Him what we are, not what we have; He does not ask for the external, but the internal. The offerings that please Him have to do with the following:
- «But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased» (Hebrews 13:16).
- «For I desire mercy and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings» (Hosea 6:6).
- Conducting ourselves in such a way «that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God» (Colossians 1:10).
- «For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart—These, O God, you will not despise» (Psalm 51:16, 17).
- «Then I will praise the God’s name with singing, and I will honor him with thanksgiving. For this will please the Lord better than sacrificing cattle, more than presenting a bull with its horns and hooves» (Psalm 69:30, 31, NLT).
- «For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord» (Ephesians
- ‘»The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is His delight» (Proverbs 15:8).
Lord, help us to know what the best offering is that we can make to you and live faithfully in Your ways. Amen.
