«But be glad and have joy forever in what I make. For see, I make Jerusalem for joy, and her people for happiness»(Isaiah 65:18, NLV).
WHEN MY SON HANY was five years old, he studied with me at home. While I was preparing lunch or doing my daily exercise routine, he did not know what to do with his time. He got bored if he was not doing something and I was not paying attention to him, so he used to ask me over and over: «Mom, what do I do now?’ Every time, I pointed out some activity he could do, but he finished every task I gave him as fast as possible, and once again got bored. That was a routine that was repeated every day until the time came to begin school.
When Hany went to school, I was very happy because he was busy for many hours. One day, it seemed that he was thinking about these things because he asked me, «Mom, what will I do in heaven with so much free time?’
I answered, «Isaiah 65:18 says that God has created so many things for us to enjoy in heaven that you will not be bored for one minute. On the contrary, you are always going to be content and happy.
It is interesting how people have their own projections of what the new earth will be like, mainly based on what negative experiences they have on this earth. To a boy, it could be boredom; to an adult woman, it could be sadness, pain, the loss of a loved one Time after time, I am surprised to realize how God has taken everything into consideration: our happiness in the New Jerusalem will be complete.
First, we are going to have new houses, and not just that, but our new houses will be under a new heaven and on a new earth (see Revelation 21:1) in which «the wolf and the lamb shall feed together» and «they shall not hurt» (Isaiah 65:25). Second, and this is really the most attractive, we will live in an environment «in which righteousness dwells» (2 Peter 3:13), where everything is «right and good» (NLV). Third, God Himself will rejoice and be happy with His people (see Isaiah 65:19).
«There shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him» (Revelation 22:3). Our joy will be perpetual.
